Martin Scorsese<\/a>\u2019s \u201cThe Irishman<\/a>\u201d has its greenlight. The $100-million gangster movie Netflix acquired earlier this year<\/a> will start production in August, according to sources connected to the production. The film marks the ninth collaboration between Scorsese and Robert De Niro<\/a>, who plays\u00a0Frank \u201cThe Irishman\u201d Sheeran, a mob hitman who supposedly was involved in the death of Jimmy Hoffa.<\/p>\n

The film stars Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale and Harvey Keitel, according to IMDb.\u00a0Steve Zaillian (\u201cMoneyball\u201d) adapted \u201cThe Irishman\u201d from\u00a0Charles Brandt\u2018s 2003 book, \u201cI Heard You Paint Houses,\u201d about Sheeran\u2019s career as a hitman. In certain scenes, De Niro will be made to look around 30 years old by VFX\u00a0company Industrial Light & Magic.<\/p>\n

Shortly before presenting De Niro with the Film Society of Lincoln Center\u2019s Chaplin Award in New York on Monday, Scorsese told the crowd that the two would begin working on their next project together in \u201ca few weeks.\u201d Director of photography Rodrigo Prieto will shoot \u201cThe Irishman,\u201d having previously served as cinematographer on Scorsese\u2019s \u201cSilence\u201d and \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sources say Netflix<\/a>\u00a0is aiming for a 2019 release day-and-date with a limited Oscar-qualifying release. The company\u00a0has 93 million subscribers in 190 countries. Netflix declined comment.<\/p>\n

STX Entertainment first acquired the rights to \u201cThe Irishman\u201d for $50 million<\/a> at last year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. The deal represented an enormous sum for a movie didn\u2019t exist yet, but\u00a0Scorsese was coming off a major hit with 2013\u2019s \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street,\u201d which took in $392 million at the worldwide box office.<\/p>\n

Paramount Pictures, which still has a production deal with Scorsese through 2019, was originally planning on producing \u201cThe Irishman\u201d before Netflix took all world rights in February. The project was first announced back in 2008.<\/p>\n
